Artists Statement

My paintings have evolved through numerous stages, phases in my life, and they tend to mirror my experiences and memories. They continue to owe much to my travels in Australia , where I was captivated by the diverse landscape and symbols, motifs, employed by the Aborigines.

In my paintings I aim to create a specific atmosphere, predominantly through tactile paint application, the careful balancing of composition and the delicate juxtaposition of colours, shapes, symbols, and texts.I continuously juggle with these elements, scraping and rubbing layers away to reveal a positive. They are concerned with, looking through:windows, nets, fences, trees, landscapes peppered with objects, exteriors and interiors, with which I feel I have almost created my own pictorial glossary of.

I ultimately only feel happy with what I have produced when, as Howard Hodgkin so succinctly puts it:

“You keep on balancing and balancing and balancing until the picture wins”
